Inaugurated by the late Sanjay Gandhi in 1975, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is located 10 kms from Jamshedpur.
The sanctuary extends over the thickly forested slopes of the 3000 ft high Dalma Mountain Range. The total area of the sanctuary is about 195 sq km.
The forest offers excellent cover for its inhabitants which include elephants, barking deer, sloth bears, leopards, porcupines and tigers. Several hideouts have been identified and marked out in the sanctuary to help wildlife lovers sight the wild animals in their natural habitat.
The steep slopes of the sanctuary provide excellent trekking opportunities and attract many trekkers throughout the year.
Another attraction within the sanctuary is a temple dedicated to Shiva, which is visited by a large number of devotees during Shivratri.
The sanctuary provides tourist accommodation in the Tata Steel and Forest department guesthouses. October to June is the best time to visit.
